To our David Douglas School District Community,
As a school district, we have a legal and moral obligation to protect our students’ rights within our buildings. The David Douglas School District firmly believes all schools should be safe havens where students can learn without fear.
At its January 9th, 2025 meeting, the David Douglas School Board approved the DDSD Board Resolution: Our Commitment to Safe & Welcoming Schools for All Students Regardless of National Origin, Immigration Status, or Documentation Status, affirming its commitment to creating safe and welcoming schools for all students.
Below are some steps David Douglas School District will not take according to the laws, our board resolution, and our commitment to creating a safe and welcoming school environment for all students.
David Douglas School District:
- Will not provide immigration officials access to school property beyond the front office except in the rare instances in which DDSD is provided with a criminal warrant (Sanctuary Law & Board Resolution).
- Will not provide information or assistance to the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in the enforcement of federal civil immigration law unless they provide a valid judicial warrant issued by a court (Sanctuary Law & Board Resolution).
- Will not remove a student for immigration law enforcement without a court order (Sanctuary Law).
- Does not and will not inquire about, collect, or maintain records related to student immigration status or that of their family members and caregivers (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act – FERPA).
- It does not and will not disclose personal information without parental consent, which is consistent with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
- It does not and will not disclose personal information without parental consent, which is consistent with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
Portland and Multnomah County are considered a “sanctuary” city and county. This means that no local law enforcement will be called in to assist Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE) actions without a criminal warrant.
As a community, we will stand firm and united to ensure our schools remain places of hope, learning, and opportunity. Your student(s) belong here. You belong here.
Sincerely,
David Douglas School District
