My name is Laura Martinez and I teach first grade at Cherry Park. I have worked in the David Douglas School District since 2004 (as a kindergarten or first-grade teacher). Before that, I taught for two years in Yerington, Nevada. I am starting my 18th year of teaching this year.
I have taught kindergarten, first, and second grade. I graduated from Lewis and Clark College with a master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction. I have a specialty in teaching ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) and as a certified Reading Specialist. I love helping children learn by having fun and trying hands-on activities in the classroom. I am passionate about developing a classroom culture where there is love, tolerance, and kindness. Most of all, I want my students to persevere and believe that anything is possible if they try!
In my free time, I love to express myself through creative art projects. I love to paint, make crafts, and draw digital graphics. I love painting inspirational messages on rocks and hiding them in my community for others to find.
I have an amazing husband, son, and one old pet cat. Our son is heading into 3rd grade this year. It’s an adventure juggling life as a wife, mother, and teacher! I wouldn’t have it any other way. I love, visiting the zoo, spending time at the beach, watching my son’s soccer games, and going to church. I am super close with my family and love visiting my parents and spending time with my close-knit family.
